About Rebecca

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My entrée into painting was literally accidental: nine years ago, a traumatic brain injury gave me sudden and surprising access to a creative side of myself I’d not known existed.

Prior to being injured, my art had been with words. I’m a published author and memoirist and a former editor; my work was in reading, editing, writing and shaping stories and narratives. These skills were lost to me for a long time after the accident.

But an intense desire to paint also awoke in me, and a hunger for color. Now, my stories are expressed through paint, and art has become a rich and playful journey of recovery and discovery.

I’m largely self-taught and my work explores internal landscapes; memories of my childhood in the wilds of Bolinas and West Marin; and spaces and places in nature where I’ve found refuge, solace and joy — three elements essential to the process of recreating myself.
